There is a no doubt that The Azores (Portugal) is one of the few remaining unspoiled natural beauties. The Azores is an archipelago of nine islands discovered in 1427 by the Portuguese and are divided into three groups:
The Eastern Group of
Sao Miguel and Santa Maria
Sao Miguel is a most populated island
of Azores also known as Green Island.
Sao Miguel’s diverse scenery is pleasant to
visitors and it features numerous coastal villages with beaches, boardwalks,
and gardens.
Santa Maria is about 55 miles from Sao Miguel. Santa Maria is also known as Yellow Island due to its sandy beaches. Santa Maria is known for having the best beaches of in the Azores.
The Central Group of
Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial
Terceira Island is located approximately 90 miles from Sao Miguel and is probably the most cosmopolitan island.
It has an international airport which serves both civilian and military needs. Terceira is famous for its underground caves and lakes.
Graciosa is the 2nd smallest island of Azores and known as the island of calm. Caldeira can only be reached through a tunnel and is where you will find a huge underground lake called Furna do Enxofre.
Sao Jorge is a long and narrow island where you can find cliffs, deep ravines and lush seaside flats. The island can be easily reached by boat from the islands of Pico or Faial.
Pico is the most beautiful island of Azores named after its imposing mountain. This mountain is actually a volcano which stands 2,350 meters tall. This island is most famous for its, locally produced, red wine.
The surface area of Faial is approximately 67 square miles. Faial is famous for its marina frequented by sailors from all over the world. There is tradition that one should paint who is visiting this marina. Due to this, the ground and the walls of this marina are covered by these paintings.
The Western Group of
Flores and Corvo
Flores is about 15 miles
from Corvo and is known for its beautiful waterfalls and flowers. The island of Flores has deep valleys and high peaks,
lakes bordered by hydrangeas. Faja Grande, westernmost town in all of Europe claims to have the best sunsets.
Corvo is the smallest islandin the Archipelago, with an area of 7 square miles. It has a very small population of just 400. Corvo is known for its simple, laid back, approach to life.
